How do I change the resolution when it is too big for my screen! When I change it my screen stays black!?

I have a HP Compaq dc 5000 mt, the monitor is a neovo f-417. When I go to change the resolution from 800 by 600 to 1024 by 768 my screen goes black and stays that way until I hook up my old screen and change it back! Help! How do I fix this?How do I change the resolution when it is too big for my screen! When I change it my screen stays black!?
Your graphics cards are probably out of date.
