You can also edit the X11 Config file. I'm not familiar with that distro, but it is usually called xorg.conf in never versions. It could be in /etc/xorg.conf or /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
Regardless, if you can't change the resolution beyond 640 x 480, there might be some video card compatibility issues. Do you have a new or highend video card? You might be able to fix this by downloading the linux driver from ATI or NVIDIA presuming you have one of their cards.How can i change the screen resolution under Linux?
ctrl alt - or + will cycle through the screen resolutions you have listed in your /etc/XF86Config file.
