How do you change the screen resolution??

okay, so i have Windows XP. I'm trying to change the screen resolution but when i change it and press ok/apply, it say...

Out Of Scan Range

46.4 KHz/ 86 Hz

what is happening??? how do i fix this???How do you change the screen resolution??
You need to update your drivers. Left click on ';my computer'; go to ';properties'; then the hardware tab. Go to device managers and find your video card, then go the their website and download it. If you have a Dell, you can go to their site and they will have the drivers for your computer. Download the drivers and install them, then try again. Hopefully this fixes the problem. It means that your video card is not using it's full capability until the drivers tell it how.How do you change the screen resolution??
you can't go any higher because your graphics card doesn't allow it- i would suggest to invest in a new graphics card. Good Luck...
Your monitor only accepts certain settings.

You need to be more specific about what monitor you have, and what settings you are trying to get.
you may need maybe a new GPU or new drivers for your GPU u have now go to start \run: DxDaig

should tell u what kind of GPU u have go to the manufactueres site and download them to update ur dirvers always keep dem drivers up to date and
go to the properties of your video card and in the dialogue box you can check to show only supported resolutions, that will tel you how far you can go with your card and your monitors refresh rates, once you peek both then you manually adjust the width and height by using the buttons on your monitor until you get what you want.push it within the highest setting support shown.
